IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM

Disconnected Recruitment Across Global Rugby.

Rugby is one of the UK's most established and widely followed team sports. England alone is home to more than 380,000 registered rugby union players, while the wider UK has well over half a million registered participants. At the elite level, the sport continues to attract millions of viewers, with England's Six Nations fixtures regularly drawing audiences of more than four million. Across Europe, Rugby Europe represents 49 national unions, creating an increasingly connected landscape of clubs, players, and professional opportunities.

Despite the scale of the sport, recruitment remains surprisingly fragmented. For many rugby players, career progression still relies heavily on word of mouth, personal networks, and limited regional visibility. Clubs and agents face similar challenges, navigating inconsistent recruitment processes with little transparency, trusted infrastructure, or efficient ways to identify talent across borders.

Existing platforms failed to meet the needs of the sport. Generic recruitment products lacked rugby-specific functionality, while multi-sport ecosystems often created poor user experiences and low trust amongst players and clubs alike.

Rugby Link identified an opportunity to rethink this entirely. The goal was not simply to create another social network, but to build a dedicated digital environment tailored specifically to rugby's pathways, positions, and professional relationships.

The platform also needed to scale beyond its initial audience. While the first release focused on players and agents, the long-term vision included clubs, fans, coaches, trainers, support staff, and ultimately expansion into other sports.

Key challenges included:

  • Limited visibility for players seeking contracts or international opportunities.
  • Fragmented and inconsistent recruitment workflows for clubs and agents.
  • Lack of rugby-specific filtering, discovery, and career development tools.
  • Low trust and poor user experience across existing recruitment platforms.
  • The need for scalable infrastructure capable of supporting future sports and audiences.

CRAFTING THE SOLUTION

A Trusted Digital Ecosystem for Rugby.

Working closely with Rugby Link, we designed a platform that combines professional networking, recruitment tooling, and community engagement into a single connected experience.

At the core of the platform is a role-driven onboarding journey supporting players, agents, clubs, and fans. Each user type has its own tailored registration flow, permissions, and profile structure, allowing the platform to balance openness with trust and verification.

Player profiles were designed to go far beyond a traditional CV. Athletes can showcase career milestones, upload media, link highlights, share statistics, and control profile visibility through configurable privacy settings. This gives players greater ownership over how they present themselves to clubs and agents globally.

To support recruitment, we implemented a powerful search and discovery engine built around rugby-specific logic. Users can filter talent by position, contract status, rugby code, location, and availability, creating a far more targeted and efficient recruitment process.

Alongside recruitment, Rugby Link introduces a social layer designed to strengthen community engagement. A chronological activity feed, follow system, and social interactions create an environment that feels active and connected, while still maintaining a professional focus.

Under the hood, the platform was engineered with scalability, performance, and flexibility at its core. The frontend was built using Next.js, leveraging technologies such as React Server Components and Incremental Static Regeneration to deliver a fast, SEO-optimised experience across devices. On the backend, Laravel and Filament provide a secure and extensible foundation for user management, moderation, and platform administration, while Payload CMS enables a flexible, code-first content workflow for editors and administrators.

Social functionality, including activity feeds and interactions, is powered through GetStream integrations, allowing real-time community engagement without compromising platform performance. Meilisearch was implemented to support fast, rugby-specific search and discovery, while Stripe handles subscription and payment infrastructure. The platform is deployed within ISO27001-accredited hosting environments, with Docker-based deployment pipelines supporting consistent development, staging, and production workflows.

Following an extensive discovery, UX strategy, and prototyping phase, the platform successfully secured investment backing and has now moved into full development with us. The project is designed not only to modernise rugby recruitment, but to establish the foundations for a scalable sports networking ecosystem with long-term global potential.
