Designing for Accessibility

In this blog we're looking at some of the core principles of approaching accessibility within our projects.

We’re passionate about creating digital products that everyone can use, regardless of their abilities. We’ve learned through our work on projects over the last 18 years that accessibility isn't just a box to tick—it's a core part of how you should approach design and development.

Accessibility: It’s Essential

When we design for accessibility, we're not just catering to those with disabilities; we're improving the experience for all users. An accessible website or app is easier to navigate, more intuitive, and often performs better in search engines. It’s about removing barriers and ensuring that everyone, from those with visual impairments to people with cognitive or motor challenges, can interact with your digital products.

Key Principles of Accessible Design

Creating accessible digital products involves following a set of principles that guide everything we do:

Perceivable Content

  • Text Alternatives: We ensure that all images, videos, and audio have text alternatives, making content accessible to screen readers.

  • Adaptable Layout: Our designs are responsive and adaptable to different devices and screen sizes, so everyone can enjoy a seamless experience.

  • Operable Interface

  • Keyboard Navigation: We make sure every function on a website or app is accessible via keyboard, catering to users who can’t use a mouse.

  • Timing Controls: We avoid time-sensitive interactions that might be difficult for users with motor or cognitive impairments.

Understandable Content

Clear Language: Simplicity is key. We use straightforward language and provide explanations for complex terms to ensure everyone understands the content.

Consistent Navigation: Our layouts are consistent across the board, making it easier for users to navigate and find what they need.

Standards Compliance: We adhere to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 to meet the highest standards of accessibility.

Our Commitment to Accessibility

At Arch, accessibility is woven into every project we take on. Whether we’re working on a community app or a complex enterprise system, we’re dedicated to ensuring that our digital products are as inclusive as possible. We’re not just building websites and apps; we’re creating experiences that everyone can enjoy.
