AdaptWell is an innovative new app that aims to provide newly arrived refugee and immigrant children in the UK with critical support through tailored educational resources and community connections.
About The Client
Designed as part of Dr. Ashwiny O Kistnareddy of the University of Oxford's latest research into the area, the app addresses a critical need for accessible English as an Additional Language (EAL) and well-being resources for newly arrived refugee and immigrant children in the UK. AdaptWell is focused on creating an intuitive, easily navigable platform that offers support in multiple languages, catering specifically to young refugees who may have limited access to resources outside of their mobile devices.
The Problem
The AdaptWell app is being developed to address the critical need for accessible resources to support newly arrived refugee and immigrant children in the UK. This population faces significant barriers to integration, including limited access to English as an Additional Language (EAL) resources and essential social support, which are crucial for academic and personal success. Identifying this need, Dr. Ashwiny envisioned a flexible, mobile-based platform tailored to these young people's unique challenges. With physical support services often limited by location or hours, AdaptWell will provide on-the-go access to language tools and community resources, empowering young users to strengthen language skills and engage with their community. The app’s mobile-friendly design ensures these tools are accessible to more children, bridging a gap in education and well-being support for refugee and immigrant youth in the UK.
The Solution
With accessibility at its core, the app features a multilingual interface in 10 languages, enabling users to navigate resources in their preferred language. The onboarding process includes an assessment to tailor content based on each user's specific language proficiency and background, guiding them toward relevant English as an Additional Language (EAL) resources and social support within their local area. AdaptWell combines interactive learning modules with curated, level-specific educational content, empowering users to track their progress and improve their language skills. Additionally, the app’s data-gathering capability supports Dr. Ashwiny’s research by collecting anonymous feedback to refine the resources in future phases, creating a solution that both addresses immediate language needs and supports long-term integration for young refugees.
As AdaptWell progresses toward its full launch, the MVP will lay the foundation for expanding resources, adding new features, and integrating more advanced functionalities, including social features and potential partnerships with local organisations. Arch’s ongoing partnership with AdaptWell is focused on creating a dynamic, adaptive tool that can respond to user feedback and grow alongside its community.
Our Approach to Developing AdaptWell
Prioritised User Experience and Interface
Designed for users aged 15-21, the app’s interface is intuitive, visually engaging, and simple to navigate. The clean layout focuses on accessibility, allowing users to complete tasks quickly.
Interactive Learning Assessment
AdaptWell’s MVP includes a learning assessment to gauge users’ English proficiency and tailor resources. This mix of questions provides a well-rounded skill evaluation and categorises users across five proficiency levels.
Multi-language Support and Accessibility
AdaptWell supports up to ten languages, including Cantonese, Ukrainian, and Arabic. The app’s multilingual functionality and WCAG 2.1 compliance ensure inclusive access and seamless language toggling for diverse users.
Resource Customisation and Filtering
Educational resources are tailored to each user’s level, allowing selection between “Tailored” and “All Resources.” Region-specific filters enhance relevance, guiding users to local services like food banks.
User Feedback and External Testing
In its MVP phase, AdaptWell will undergo closed testing to gather user and stakeholder feedback. This iterative process helps refine features and ensures the app aligns with its research-backed objectives.
