Apple enthusiasts and tech fans from around the world gathered virtually to watch the September Apple Event 2023, broadcast from Apple Park in Cupertino, California. The company announced a long run of products and innovations, from hardware upgrades to software features, and this year's event had plenty to cover.
iPhone 15: Bigger, Better, and Bolder
The event kicked off with the star of the show, the iPhone 15. We were introduced to a device with plenty of upgrades. Apple announced four models: the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Pro Max. Each of them has a larger display, with the iPhone 15 at a generous 6.1 inches and the iPhone 15 Plus pushing further with a 6.7-inch display.

Size was only part of it. Apple's focus on innovation was on full display in the camera updates they unveiled. The iPhone 15's camera can now automatically detect people or even pets in the frame and switch on Portrait Mode, which adds depth and separates the subject from the background.
Navigation Revolution: "Double Tap" on the Apple Watch
The Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 were also part of the lineup, bringing more power and versatility to your wrist. A new gesture, aptly named "Double Tap," lets users navigate their watches with ease and makes interactions quicker. For an earlier hardware launch, see our write-up of Apple’s 2020 hardware event.
The Ultra 2, in particular, has a sleek design and a 2.1-inch always-on LTPO OLED screen. With that screen and extended battery life, it's clear that Apple's wearables are moving smartwatches forward.

Carbon Neutrality and a Greener Future
Apple's focus on environmental sustainability was a recurring theme throughout the event. The company announced its transition away from leather accessories, opting for the "FineWoven" textile made from 68% post-consumer content. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 was also declared a carbon-neutral product, which reflects Apple's stated aim of a greener future.
Embracing Change: USB-C and Satellite Features
Apple announced that the iPhone 15 series would retire the Lightning connector in favor of the industry-standard USB-C port. The change comes ahead of a European Union deadline and brings iPhone users the convenience of USB-C charging, data transfers, and audio playback.
For us, the most exciting revelation was the integration of AAA roadside assistance into the iPhone 15's emergency features. Whether you lock your keys in the car or find yourself stranded with vehicle trouble, the iPhone 15 has your back. You'll need to become an AAA member for full access, but everyone with the iPhone 15 can enrol in all Emergency SOS satellite services for free for two years. We can only hope the UK will receive a version of this in collaboration with the AA.
The Action Button: Your Personalized Shortcut
Apple's push for user-friendly features led to the Action Button, built into the side of the iPhone 15 Pro's titanium case. It does more than mute the phone: it is your personal shortcut to your most-used apps. Imagine having your favourite app a button press away.

Apple Vision Pro: A Sneak Peek into the Future
While the hardware took most of the attention, Apple teased us with a glimpse of the future: Apple Vision Pro. Although the updates were minimal, the upcoming headset has us all on the edge of our seats. As Tim Cook declared, "We're on track to ship by early next year," and we are eagerly waiting to see what it brings.
